HP-NADO CASE

The HP-NADO cases are two cases multimedia cases that describe the implementation of an ERP system over several years at Hewlett-Packard. Students are given a set of questions to answer and submit online, and then navigate through the online cases using any web browser. Students view short video interviews of real participants in the implementation as well as authentic documents, demos, and online supporting materiails. The cases are typically used in introductory courses on IT Managment, IT Strategy, and Introduction to MIS. The cases may also be used in Project Management courses with session emphasizing large-scale IT projects. Each case takes about 90 minutes to work through.

The first case is "The Pilot." It describes past ERP efforts and the problems they encountered, the motivation for a pilot program, and how it was carried out. Learning objectives include

  • the motivation for enterprise software
  • special challenges of implementing software that spans multiple divisions and impacts business processes
  • approaches to implementing enterprise software
  • an introductory understanding of ERP systems

The second case is the "The Roll Ins." It describes the roll out of the ERP system to successively larger parts of the organization over several years. Learning objectives include the challenges of rolling out enterprise software over time periods sufficiently long that requirements and technology change.

The HP NADO cases were developed with Professor Haim Mendelson at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

For not-for-profit institutions, the price per student is $12 for the Pilot case alone, or $18 for the Pilot and the Rollins together. Bookstores and copy centers may add an additional markup to the price.
